Environmental Award
The Environmental Award is designed to recognise exceptional improvement in business performance achieved through good environmental management – including any new environmental policies adopted (e.g. waste recycling) or any other ‘green’ policy which have resulted in cost reductions, improved efficiency, profit growth or quality improvements.
John Tinnelly and Sons demonstrated that, since their establishment in 1959, they have been active in various markets, including demolition, asbestos abatement, metal recycling and end of life vehicle processors. Social & Environmental Benefits
The Environment
To prevent toxins, dioxins, spent fuels and oils from polluting their main metal recycling in Newtowncloughogue, and to eliminate the risk of contamination throughout the transport infrastructure, John Tinnelly and Sons demonstrated how the crushed remains of cars leaving their site for metal recovery are certified free from contaminants. Also, all water flowing through the yard passes through two interceptors, to ensure that clean water flows from this holding yard and damage is prevented to the connected river (and therefore to the greater environment)
Business Opportunities
To ensure that quality schemes are successful, they must demonstrate economical viability. Following the resurfacing and purchase of the End of Life Vehicle processing unit, John Tinnelly and Sons has now applied for approval as and “Authorised ELV Processing Facility”.
When granted, this will permit the company to link up with the “Car Take Back Scheme”, a scheme that works in conjunction with all main car dealers in the North of Ireland, and means that car dealers are required to dispose of all vehicles through an authorised ELV, “Car Take Back Scheme” where they have been traded-in and are not suitable for re-sale,
